What is The Rebellion Insider?
Spirituality is something many of us come to through pain. We have a “spiritual awakening” or some traumatic event and a switch gets flipped within us. We start looking for answers to questions. We start to realize that life isn’t what we think it is. Something changes within us and we hop on the spirituality bandwagon.
I found spirituality while searching Google for a religion because my life stopped making sense to me. The spiritual principles that I ran into at first started to make sense. Spirituality offered me a path to healing myself that my old religion, Roman Catholicism, didn’t offer. Yes, I’m a recovering Catholic.
It’s been almost 11 years since that day. During that time I have gone from learning some basic spiritual principles to a complete mindset shift and way of viewing the world. Me and my life look very different than they did 11 years ago.
My process of healing was intuitive. It wasn’t something I read in a book. The journey started with understanding my own thoughts and feelings. After a few years of that, I realized that I also needed to change my behavior or how I showed up in the world. There is nothing more frustrating than to continue to act from the pain you think you’ve healed. This is a very quick way to keep yourself stuck in your old pain.
Eventually I was shown this process intuitively from a higher place. They showed me the path that I’d been on and what I’d actually being doing. From there I created this concept of spiritual self-mastery - mastering yourself in the experience without changing, controlling, or manipulating the experience.
Spirituality tends to get overrun by human ego constructs and rules. There is a lot of ego in spirituality as many people try to make the spiritual principles fit into the human perceived rules for how things work. It was from there that I started to dive into philosophical concepts such as existentialism, moral nihilism, duality, and neutrality. What I learned was that the things that people considered philosophical concepts were actually necessary in order to make the spiritual principles work while in human form. If you want to live by spiritual principles, you need philosophical constructs like existentialism in order to do it.
The reason why I call this space The Rebellion Insider is because I mesh philosophy and spirituality. I live by these ideas, which in today’s world makes me a sort of a rebel. I’m not just philosophizing. I’ve created my own reality from these constructs. They have helped me heal in the sense that I could release the pain. I am able to look at experience and make meaning from it that doesn’t offer me pain. I don’t self-create pain by telling stories of blame, shame, guilt, and victimization. I’ve learned how to manage myself in the experience in such a way that life is no longer painful and I don’t have to put my head in the sand or pretend things aren’t happening to do it.
There is a lot of chaos in the world today. Being able to be okay in all that chaos isn’t always easy. By using spiritual principles and some philosophy, we can learn to recognize the pain that’s being projected by other people. Instead of being hurt by their pain or trying to protect ourselves from it, we can just recognize it and let it be there. We can move to compassion from self-defense.
A big part of how the human ego works and how the world is perceived by most people is through a lens of self-defense. When we perceive the world in this way it creates pain that isn’t necessarily there. Learning to stop constantly looking over our shoulders and allow ourselves to just see the pain that’s present offers a sense of peace that can be hard to find. It’s okay if people throw their pain around. You don’t have to play catch. It’s not yours. There is nothing to defend yourself from.
Self-mastery teaches us how to manage ourselves. When we understand that we can manage our thoughts and feelings, while deciding how to respond to the things that happen around us, it offers a sense of control. I can’t control what happens around me, but I can control what happens within me. That is where self-mastery shines.
